GIFFORDS: COURAGE TO FIGHT GUN VIOLENCE

On 1/8/11, U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others were shot during a constituent meeting held in a supermarket parking lot in Casas Adobes, Arizona. Giffords was shot in the head with a 33-round-magazine Glock pistol.

In early 2013, Giffords announced the formation of an organization to fight the gun violence epidemic. Her commitment to common-sense gun laws & persistence in their pursuit has been inspiring as she continues to recover.

“At Giffords, we envision a safer America, where our children grow up without fear of gun violence. We research, write, and propose policies that make Americans safer and mobilize voters and lawmakers in support of safer gun laws. We realize that no one law can prevent all acts of gun violence, but we know that enacting good policies and supporting politicians ready to turn those policies into action will save lives.”

CLOSE THE GAP

Close the Gap California is a statewide campaign to achieve gender balance in the California Legislature by recruiting progressive women to run. We recruit accomplished women in targeted districts and prepare them to launch competitive campaigns. Our recruits are pro-choice, pro-public school funding and support paths out of poverty. CTGCA’s goal is closing the gender gap in the California Legislature by 2028.

We believe that progressive women can affect positive, lasting change in California and beyond, by serving in the State Legislature. The women we recruit are positioned to lead on issues of equity in California, and to set the national gold standard for progressive policy and governance. Over 75% of our recruits are women of color.
